Debate plays a very prominent role in MGS, be it in the club, outside school or in the classroom. In fact the MGS School Debating Team is greatly respected in the debating circuit. Ranked amongst the best speakers in Singapore, MGS debaters make winning competitions a way of life. The Debating Club has about seventy members while the School Team consists of about ten members. With ex-girls coming back to coach, it is no wonder that the School Team continues to dominate in the debating arena. The Club has its own coach too and every debater is given ample opportunities to sharpen her skills in the annual intra-club competition, The May Oh Challenge trophy. Covering issues like Euthanasia, Abortion and Voting Rights and so on, the debaters increase their knowledge by reading widely and extensively.
The School Team participates in major competitions like the Secondary Schools Debating Competition, The NUS Challenge Shield, Hwa Chong Invitationals, Temasek JC Invitationals, North West CDC Challenge Shield, Methodist Cup, Youth Under 14 Debate, Victoria JC invitationals and Serangoon JC Invitationals. Needless to say, our debaters often excel and are ranked highly.
Our major highlight this year is the debating trip to Perth in November. Forty debaters from Secondary One to Four will travel all the way there to debate against the stylish and polished Australian debaters. This eye-opening experience is intended to give our debaters a chance to learn from their Australian counterparts and to bond as a big family. To raise funds to subsidise their trip, the debaters have started working really hard selling chocolates and gummies during recess and after school. This experience alone has brought the entire club and team together. Debating is indeed an art which allows participants to develop three basic abilities "Better Thinking, Listening and Speaking". It provides the platform for one to grow to become a great leader of the world!
