Why are we called Brownies?

More than 80 years ago, our founder, Lord Baden Powell (1857-1941), started Scouting and Guiding for teenagers. In the past, guides from the age of 7-11 were grouped together as “Rosebuds”.  Later, Lord Baden Powell, remembering an old story, renamed them “Brownies”.

Brownies have a lot of fun spending time together and making new friends. Being with other Brownies is like playing a game: of adventure, of observation, of general knowledge, of ideas.  It is a game played by all- from the young to the very old, from Brownies to Commissioners.  You play the game through a series of healthy and happy activities. The game becomes an educational course that teaches you how to lead a useful life.

As a Brownie, you will take part in exciting and meaningful activities indoors as well as outdoors, find happiness in helping others and attend educational adventure camps and of course make many new friends!

There are six Brownie groups - Elves, Fairies, Gnomes, Imps, Pixies and Sprites. Each group is called a “Six”, where the leader is the “Sixer” and the assistant leader a “Second”.  Every leader comes up with enjoyable games and activities for her group.  Camps and field trips are regularly held for fun and for educational purposes. All the trips are well-planned and are packed with exciting activities and educational talks. Our outings so far included that a visit to a hydroponic farm, OMNI-theatre shows and trip to the Botanic Gardens.

Brownies have special secrets and signs. Some of these secrets and signs are also used by Brownies of other countries. Come and join us and find out which countries share our secrets and signs!
