The Girls’ Brigade is an international, inter-denominational Christian youth organization for girls; it was first established in Singapore in 1927. Mrs Elsie Lyne, a young Girls’ Life Brigade officer from the 1st Gateshead Company, Durham, came to Singapore to teach at the Methodist Girls’ School.  She then started the 1st Singapore Company in MGS and this marked the beginning of the Brigade in Singapore.

The motto of the Girls’ Brigade is to Seek, Serve and Follow Christ and our aim is to help girls become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ and find true enrichment of life through reverence, self-control and a sense of responsibility.  The organization provides training to develop mind, body and spirit and to inculcate a sense of responsibility through useful Christian service.

The 1^st S’pore Company is the only full company in Singapore and has a total enrolment of about 160 girls from Primary 2 to Secondary 4 in 2007.  Our activities include weekly teaching about God, drill, badgework, leadership training and recreation.  In 2006, both the Primary and Secondary School attained Gold for the National Company Award.  

Eighty years on, that same spirit of dedication has produced generations of leaders in the company.  Today, MGS alumnae continue to serve in the Brigade; some return to help out on a weekly basis and some whenever the need arises. They serve as officers or on an ad-hoc basis.  Most of them say that they have never really left, and that a part of them still remains with the Company.  Naturally, the Company’s theme song, “The Lord’s Family”, is a reflection of the strong family ties past and present Brigaders have built up over the years.
